This Week's Watch List Released With 3 HPS Featured

Great Watch List this week. I would prefer a small gap down on some of the setups and will really have to see the early Monday morning action to feel comfortable in this market. Meaning, I just want to make sure we do not get hit with any over the weekend news that effects the markets. There were some downgrades from Fitch on Friday after the close, but if the markets act similar to the last set up downgrades, then this should not be much to worry about. $SPX  (S&P) is a bit extended, but that means nothing until we get a confirmed move down and failed bounce  

I added individual charts to the watch list video page so you can print some of the patterns to watch for in the markets. Let me know if you like that feature.

Again, the markets continue to hold good gains for the New Year and still see the potential for more upside.  I will be watching close for the negative divergence in the market that could predict a pull back.

Markets and individual stocks are extended and giving good short signals. But, as we all know, markets can become more overbought before ever correcting. I am not looking for a major correction, but suspect recent Greek debt talks and underlying positives in the market (housing and employment numbers) are helping the markets climb a "wall of worry."  This could continue as there are still many scenarios to play out and until we get some definitive news, I would be hesitant to overstay any short position. That being said, if any news comes out on a more positive note than already expected, I will be looking for a sell the news short term top. 

I really don't want to get to hung up on the news.  Most importantly, I'd like to continue to be disciplined in the market in selecting positions and waiting for the best High Probability Setups (HPS) and taking the profits that result. The path is clear, do not complicate matters by thinking too much and keep the chair close to you!

On Friday the S&P ratings agency downgraded France and 8 other European countries, This had been hinted too over the last month so I am on the side of just seeing a small reaction Tuesday morning in the market due to this expected news. The markets had been warned of potential downgrades in December and rumors had been flying the last few day on the exact timing. I would look for a small pullback early Tuesday and would not be surprised if we actually gapped up in the futures Tuesday morning. With this behind us This weeks watch list is definitely the best of the year. There are 2 "Kick Ass Trades of the Week" for this week and would like to continue the success from last weeks pick (DD). Again I want to stress the importance of timing in this market, only taking the trade that comes to you. Each trade should be planned out and executed with a profit exit plan and exit plan if the trade does not work out. Please pay attention to the VALE chart description on this weeks watch list as it goes over in better detail the time layering indicator, and how important it is to wait for the trade to set up.

Well the HPS 40 is into its second week and the first week was great. really step up the discipline and took most of the emotion out of the trade, SOA, BTU, PAY, CHK, CREE and LQDT all text book entries and exits TGT was also a HPS but took it off with a small loss before same store sales, and ended up being the right move. This week I return with the Kick Ass Trade of the Week, and look to continue the streak and continue on applying the discipline need to trade this market.

HPS 40

Tonight I also like to release the first edition of the HPS 40. The HPS 40 is a selection of 40 stocks that each have their own unique qualifications based on overall quality, institutional interest, liquidity, Beta and average range of trade  and shows a consistent history of pattern development.This will be more defined when the main section is launched . As a stock shows good characteristics it will be added to the index and one that has dried up and does not look to be consistent will be dropped. This will happen at any time.

2012 New Years Week Watch List

Happy New Year!

 Today is the first day of the rest of your life.. You know the saying and probably heard it a thousand times but how many people use it to empower themselves to reach a level where they have no regrets and truly feel good about everyday they have.

The market is an organism that is constantly evolving and adapting to the changes around it, It is influences by factors that spread across the world we live in and sometimes there are no rhyme or reason behind it. This in itself makes it an uneven playing field and the advantage always goes to the person who can maintain his composure and capital in the chop that has become more and more prevalent. Over the last year we have seen the markets get more and more volatile only to end the year pretty much unchanged. This volatility is in fact good for traders who can take advantage of it. But because of the volatility it has become harder and harder to be a longer term investor and rules of prior years are no long applicable. The days of listening to analyst are over, everyone has there own bias and agenda and because we cannot distinguish between pure due diligence or biased opinion (if you notice most times a analyst comes on to talk about a stock its because they have an interest in it one way or another).

The fear (volatility) in today's markets are probably one of the hardest  factors to deal with. The term "fear' is a dead give away on how the markets react to uncertainty. Fear is the main emotion that will take you out of your trade and usually the main reason you make irrational decisions in the market like getting back into a stock because it is moving and you are "afraid" of missing an opportunity..letting the trade get away from you. The main reason 90% (rough estimate) of traders fail is because they react to there emotions and usually got their signals mixed up.

Now understanding what is wrong with something is half the battle the other key part is correcting it. When it comes to the markets and fear  you need to take steps that force you not to fall in with the herd.to control the fear.

Hope everyone had a very nice holiday. Historically, we enter a week which has a very high bias to the upside, and it comes with the name "Santa Claus Rally" and typically goes into the first couple days of January. We really got to see the effects of this last week beginning Tuesday and closed out very strong on Friday. The light volume grind should continue as we kick off the week tomorrow. Last week's push has really extended most stocks out of really good buy areas and even though there is a good chance of more upside. I would be cautious chasing the market as we are hitting my target of 1267 short term. I would use the strength to take some profits and mentally prepare for a New Year of trading. As for shorts, the bias is to the upside and until that changes, I want to be cautious shorting other then intra-day and futures.

This week's watch list really defines the goals and methodology of researching and picking trades for the watch list, and to step away from that would just put all the risk back on the table. When there really isn't any need for that. Sorry that the watch list got out late this weekend was spending a thankful holiday with my family.

Looking for another volatile pre-holiday trade this upcoming week, Volume will start to dry up as we approach the weekend. Conditions merit a very cautious outlook, but there is a big move right around the corner, I feel it will be triggered with some news. Cash is king and cut back on your shares. Have your "goto" longs (HANS, RAI, STT) and Shorts (RL, BWLD, FOSL) handy. This weeks watch list touches on the stocks that are very strong and have not shown the volatility that is gripping the markets. The shorts are still set up, but the market will be choppy and best to be safe and cutting back on size if you are going to trade this week.

I am looking for more upside in the $SPX so right now just looking out for some shorts but not looking to take anything yet, The overall patterns I am seeing across most sectors are pointing to many big names to turn out of the downtrends and confirm new up trends. I was able to find another great wedge pattern like CHK last week (It is of the Kick Ass Trades of the Week).
