When our first president sat down for a relaxing evening with a drink, it probably was a modest glass of whiskey.

But just because that's what he drank doesn't mean the modern world can't add a few flavorful touches and still name it after the man.

The George Washington is a mix of the whiskey that Washington himself might have drunk with sour apple schnapps, cranberry juice and a dash of lemon-lime soda.

Combined, the ingredients provide a smooth drink with a tart edge that's sure to pick you up.

The unique taste lies in the mix of the schnapps - which evokes the Washington Apple - with the cranberry juice, providing a natural fruit taste that brings to mind the bounty of our great nation.

The soda serves to curb the more tart aspects of the fruit flavors, lending a sweet and bubbly flavor to the proceedings.

Washington was a charismatic and smooth leader, with the ability to converge parties that would normally clash.

The drink reflects this, and with no harsh alcohol burn, it makes for easy sipping.

Still, the drink has a strong core with the mix of whiskey and schnapps. It's easy to underestimate how strong it is until your glass is empty.

The George Washingtonworks best in a glass with plenty of ice, but also can be converted into a shot for quick consumption.

Simply omit the ice, the splash of soda and enjoy.
